Founder Story
CBC Tech was founded by Tom Wei and Richard Fung in 2008, working with limited resources to fulfill their vision for a new kind of international ICT solutions provider.
Both Wei and Fung had met as senior telecommunications executives with significant experience in both China and the United States.
Wei, a graduate of Southeast University in Nanjing with a B. Eng in Information Engineering, had carved out a vocation in the US energy sector after completing his Masters in Computer Science from San Francisco State University in 1994. His first foray into the telecoms sector began when he was transferred to the broadband division of an US energy giant that began laying fiber lines alongside its nationwide gas pipeline.
Fung began his telecoms career soon after graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor's degree in engineering. He would go on to pursue a Master's Degree in Science at Imperial College London, landing a job at Sprint International where he rose through the ranks to become senior executive.
It was while at Sprint International that Fung and Wei (by then, managing director of China Netcom’s international business unit) forged a bond over their common frustration in helping foreign companies’ setup network access for their China-based operations.
They realized that if foreign companies operating in China wanted anything more than basic network connectivity, they would be disappointed. Bundling local network connectivity with international offerings was a huge headache, mired in complicated applications, licenses and approvals that left most companies in despair.
This was a huge market opportunity underserved by China’s Tier-1 telcos. Despite a lean operation, limited funding and small size, Wei and Fung determined CBC Tech could prevail against the incumbents by streamlining the application process and developing bespoke solutions.
Working carefully, they painstakingly scrutinized every aspect of the business and worked hard to optimize their business operations so they could deliver a one-stop service for their customers. With a small but diverse team of experienced and industry-leading specialists, CBC Tech nurtured a customer-centric culture and continued investing in technology.
Their hard work paid off in 2008 when they finally inked their first contract with an American corporate customer. Flying in from Beijing, Wei and Fung worked tirelessly, shuttling between New York City to Washington DC (all within the same day) to convince the customer they could deliver what they promised.
Since then, the company has grown from strength to strength powered by their firm belief and unwavering determination to excellent customer service. The burning passion and strong stewardship of Wei and Fung led the CBC Tech team to expand from a humble 50 square-meter office with only seven staff, to the current six offices across China, Hong Kong and Singapore, employing approximately 200 staff today.
Over the years, CBC Tech has evolved from a traditional telco service provider to a leading Cloud and ICT managed services provider, continuously updating our solution portfolio with a slew of next-generation services including Software Defined WAN and Cloud services. With an unwavering commitment to put our customers at the center of all innovation and development at CBC Tech, our core customer-first DNA—to deliver future-proof quality services and excellent customer experiences—remains unchanged.
